Procrastination and its Perils

procrastination

It was ten minutes past four in the evening. Esther sat on a plastic chair in her room with her chin cupped in the hollow of her left palm. She stared at the wall, looking at nothing in particular. She wondered why her life had taken such a sad turn.

She just had a carry-over in one of her courses. As a party type who was always in a bid to feel among, she neglected her responsibility as a student. She only read when her examinations were around the corner and bribed her way out with her lecturers when she thinks she cannot measure up. Dr Fola however won’t just cooperate with her. Therefore, she failed.

Just then, her roommate, Evelyn, rushed into the room to watch her favourite Educational TV programme which always come up at four o’clock. She came to a halt when her gaze fell on Esther.

“Why are you here?” Evelyn teased. She was surprised to see her friend in the room at that hour.

Evelyn switched on the TV and sat on her bed.

“You look sad. What’s wrong?” Evelyn asked in a concerned way, noticing her friend’s bad mood.

“I had a carry-over in ECN302. I hate that woman, she’s mean and…” She stopped as the last statement made by the interviewer invited to give a talk in the programme her friend tuned to caught her attention.

“The reason why varsity students fail is procrastination” Mr. James said.

“They postpone their responsibility to some other time, forgetting that the best time to act is now!”

“That time is not even promised” the presenter added.

“Exactly!” Mr James affirmed,

“They failed to realise that it would be difficult to study when the exam is just around the corner…”

Just then, the power was interrupted.

“Oh.. NEPA” Evelyn groaned.

“Maybe that’s the reason why I failed” Esther said to herself.

“I need to get some things done” she said as she stood up to pick her lecture notes. “See ya later.” She added before her roommate could say a thing.

“Okay. Bye” Evelyn replied as her friend leaves for the library.

Esther developed interest in reading good materials— textbooks, spiritual books, etc and in no time, she became a bookworm. She passed all her papers at the end of the semester.

Before a man achieves a thing, he needs to let go of some things.
As a Christian, you need to let go of those “little weights of sin” disturbing your walk with God.

Just as Esther in the story above, you need to let go of procrastination, wordly pleasure, laziness, etc.

Walking with God should be what you must pursue. It determines how far you will go on earth and also prepares you for a glorious afterlife.

Perfect walk with God will make you grow in all ramifications. “Little sins” will however, disturb this growth. I called them little because we overlook them, thinking that they are nothing, whereas, they are dangerous.

From the story above, procrastination disturbed Esther. Do you know that the time you have is a gift from God for you to use it for His glory? You need to act now and act well! Failure to do so will hinder growth.

Are you saved? If NO, here’s another opportunity to give your life to Jesus. Accept Him as your personal Lord and Saviour. Remember, procrastination is opportunities’ natural assasin. Postponing your salvation and what’s needed to be done is dangerous. Are you instructed by God to do something? Do that now! Obey Him. Do what is right, at the right time and in the right way.

Shalom!
